Questions about cooking ingredients
Can't see your question? Get in touch and we'll help.
How do I use chia seeds or linseeds instead of egg?
Mix one tablespoon of chia seeds or ground linseed with three tablespoons of water and leave for about ten minutes until it forms a gel. This replaces one egg in muffins, pancakes and cookies.
What's the difference between cacao powder, cacao nibs and cacao liquor?
Cacao powder is finely ground with most of the fat removed, ideal for baking and drinks. Nibs are crunchy crushed pieces of the bean, and cacao liquor is the whole ground bean set into a solid block that you melt to make your own chocolate.
What's the difference between brown and golden linseeds?
They are two varieties of the same plant. Golden linseeds are slightly milder and look neater in pale bakes, but you can use them interchangeably.
Can I swap coconut flour for almond flour?
Not one for one. Coconut flour soaks up much more liquid, so as a rough guide use about a quarter of the amount and add an extra egg for every quarter cup of coconut flour.
Should I buy fine or coarse Himalayan pink salt?
Fine salt is best for everyday cooking, baking and the table. Coarse salt suits grinders, brines and salt crusts.
What does nutritional yeast taste like?
It has a savoury, nutty, cheese-like flavour. Sprinkle it over pasta and popcorn or stir it into sauces, soups and scrambled tofu.
