Description
What are Wheatgrass Seeds?
Organic Wheatgrass Seeds are certified organic wheat berries (Triticum aestivum) for growing at home in two ways: as chewy, sweet wheat sprouts in a jar in 2–3 days, or as fresh wheatgrass in a tray of compost in 7–10 days.
Highlights
- Certified organic wheatgrass seed (whole wheat berries)
- Two ways to grow: jar sprouts (2–3 days) or wheatgrass in compost (7–10 days)
- Sweet, grassy flavour, great for fresh wheatgrass juice
- Also popular as pet grass
How to use
How to grow Wheatgrass Seeds
- Soak about 5 tablespoons (around 100g) of seed per 1-litre jar in plenty of cool water for 8–12 hours.
- Drain well and keep the jar at room temperature, out of direct sun, tilted so excess water runs out.
- Rinse and drain 2–3 times a day.
- Harvest after 2–3 days, when the roots are about the length of the grain. Give them a final rinse, drain very well and keep them in the fridge, using within 2–3 days.
How to grow wheatgrass in compost (7–10 days)
- Prepare: soak the seed for 8–12 hours, then drain and leave for another 8–12 hours until tiny sprout tails appear.
- Sow in a single, close layer over 2–3cm of moist seed compost in a shallow tray with drainage holes. Use about 200–250g for a standard 25 × 50cm tray, or 50–60g for a 15 × 20cm tray.
- Cover for 2–3 days to keep them dark and moist while the roots take hold.
- Grow on in bright light, watering from below so the compost stays damp but not soggy. Don't sow too densely: crowded trays are the main cause of mould on grasses.
- Cut just above the compost when the grass is 12–18cm tall, usually after 7–10 days.
Quality & Sourcing: Nature's Root selects high-quality organic seed and packs it carefully to maintain freshness. Batches are checked for quality and handled in line with good manufacturing practices.
Allergens & Storage: Packed in a facility that handles nuts and sesame. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Reseal after opening.
Food safety: The Food Standards Agency advises cooking sprouted seeds until they're steaming hot all the way through before eating, unless they're sold as ready to eat. Home-grown sprouts aren't, so cook them first, and keep them in the fridge once harvested.

What's the difference between wheat sprouts and wheatgrass?
Wheat sprouts are eaten after 2–3 days in a jar, with a short root, and taste sweet and chewy. Wheatgrass is grown on for 7–10 days in compost and cut for juicing.
How long does wheatgrass take?
About 7–10 days from sowing, cut when it's 12–18cm tall. It usually regrows for a smaller second cut.
How much seed should I use?
About 5 tablespoons for a 1-litre jar, or 200–250g for a standard 25 × 50cm tray (50–60g for a 15 × 20cm tray).
Do I need a juicer?
A slow (masticating) juicer works best for wheatgrass. You can also blend it with water and strain it.
Should I cook sprouts before eating them?
Yes. The Food Standards Agency advises cooking sprouted seeds until they're steaming hot all the way through, unless they're sold as ready to eat. Home-grown sprouts aren't, so cook them before eating.
Is it suitable for vegans?
Yes.
How should I store the seeds?
Keep them sealed in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, and reseal the pouch after opening.
