How to use
How to grow Sunflower Sprouting Seeds
- Prepare: soak the seed for 8–12 hours, then drain and leave in a jar or sieve for another 12–24 hours, rinsing once or twice, until tiny roots appear.
- Sow in a single, close layer over 2–3cm of moist seed compost in a shallow tray with drainage holes. Use about 150–200g for a standard 25 × 50cm tray, or 40–50g for a 15 × 20cm tray. Press them gently into the surface but don't bury them.
- Cover for 2–3 days to keep them dark and moist while the roots take hold.
- Grow on in bright light, watering from below so the compost stays damp but not soggy. Mist the tops to soften any husks still stuck to the leaves, then brush them off gently.
- Cut just above the compost when the shoots are 8–10cm tall, before the second set of leaves appears, usually after 8–12 days.

You might also like
Can I grow sunflower shoots in a jar?
Only to give them a head start. Pre-sprouting in a jar for a day helps them grow evenly, but the shoots need compost and light to grow.
How long do sunflower shoots take?
About 8–12 days from sowing. Cut them before the second set of leaves appears, as they become bitter after that.
How much seed should I use?
About 150–200g for a standard 25 × 50cm tray, or 40–50g for a 15 × 20cm tray.
How do I get rid of the husks?
Most husks fall off as the shoots grow. Misting the tops softens any that stick, so you can brush them off.
Is it suitable for vegans?
Yes.
How should I store the seeds?
Keep them sealed in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, and reseal the pouch after opening.
