Description
What are 'Nero di Toscana' Kale Seeds?
Organic 'Nero di Toscana' Kale Seeds are certified organic Tuscan kale seeds (cavolo nero, Brassica oleracea var. acephala) for growing mild, nutty sprouts in a jar in 4–5 days, or microgreens on a tray in 8–12 days.
Highlights
- Certified organic ‘Nero di Toscana’ (cavolo nero) kale seed
- Two ways to grow: jar sprouts (4–5 days) or microgreens on a tray (8–12 days)
- Mild, sweet and nutty greens
- Easy for beginners and grows all year on a windowsill
How to use
How to grow 'Nero di Toscana' Kale Seeds
- Soak 2 tablespoons of seed per 1-litre jar in plenty of cool water for 6–8 hours.
- Drain well and keep the jar at room temperature, out of direct sun, tilted so excess water runs out.
- Rinse and drain 2–3 times a day. Gently loosen the sprouts as they fill the jar so air can reach the middle.
- Green up: on the last day, move the jar into indirect light so the little leaves turn green.
- Harvest after 4–5 days, when the sprouts are 2.5–4cm long with small green leaves. Give them a final rinse, drain very well and keep them in the fridge, using within 2–3 days.
How to grow kale microgreens on a tray (8–12 days)
- Prepare a shallow tray with a damp hemp or coir mat, a few layers of kitchen paper or 1–2cm of moist seed compost.
- Sow: There's no need to soak the seed first. Scatter the seed thinly and evenly, using about 15–20g for a standard 25 × 50cm tray or 4–5g for a 15 × 20cm tray.
- Cover for 2–3 days to keep the seeds dark and moist while they germinate. Mist them if the surface starts to dry.
- Grow on in bright light, watering from below so the base stays damp but not soggy.
- Cut just above the base once the first pair of leaves has opened, usually after 8–12 days.
Quality & Sourcing: Nature's Root selects high-quality organic seed and packs it carefully to maintain freshness. Batches are checked for quality and handled in line with good manufacturing practices.
Allergens & Storage: Packed in a facility that handles nuts and sesame. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Reseal after opening.
Food safety: The Food Standards Agency advises cooking sprouted seeds until they're steaming hot all the way through before eating, unless they're sold as ready to eat. Home-grown sprouts aren't, so cook them first, and keep them in the fridge once harvested.

You might also like
How long do kale sprouts take?
About 4–5 days in a jar, or 8–12 days as microgreens on a tray.
How much seed should I use?
About 2 tablespoons for a 1-litre jar, or 15–20g for a standard 25 × 50cm tray (4–5g for a 15 × 20cm tray).
Can I grow full-size kale from these seeds?
Yes. They're the same ‘Nero di Toscana’ variety grown in gardens, so you can sow some outdoors in spring as well.
What do kale microgreens taste like?
Mild, slightly sweet and nutty, much gentler than mature kale. They suit salads, sandwiches and grain bowls.
Should I cook sprouts before eating them?

Keep them sealed in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, and reseal the pouch after opening.
