What is Indigo powder and what is it used for?

Indigo powder is a natural dye that is derived from the leaves of the Indigofera tinctoria plant. It has been used for centuries to dye fabrics, yarns, and other materials. Indigo powder can be used to create a range of shades from pale blue to dark navy depending on the preparation method and the mordant used. In addition to being used for textiles, indigo powder is also used in traditional hair dyeing and body art.

Indigo powder has also been traditionally used in Ayurvedic and Chinese Medicine for various ailments such as skin diseases, wounds, and as a blood purifier. However, there is limited scientific evidence to support these traditional uses, and more research is needed to understand the potential health benefits of indigo powder.

Note that before use, indigo powder is usually mixed with other ingredients such as salt, lime, or other herbs in order to activate the color and make it more usable

How to use Indigo Powder for hair?

Indigo powder can be used to color hair in shades of blue. Here is one method to use indigo powder for hair:

    1. Mix the indigo powder: In a plastic bowl, mix the indigo powder with water until it forms a smooth paste.

    2. Apply the dye: Apply the indigo paste to your hair, starting at the roots and working your way to the ends. Be sure to cover all of your hair evenly.

    3. Wait: Leave the indigo paste on your hair for at least 30 minutes. The longer you leave it on, the deeper the color will be.

    4. Rinse: Rinse your hair thoroughly with water until the water runs clear.

    5. Condition: After rinsing your hair, apply a deep conditioner to your hair to help moisturize and protect it from the effects of the dye.

Note: Indigo is traditionally used to darken Henna. If you're using indigo on top of henna, you should wait for at least 24 hours after applying henna before applying indigo.

It's important to keep in mind that color results may vary depending on hair type, texture, porosity, and the initial color of your hair. It's best to do a patch test first, using a small amount of indigo powder on a small section of your hair to see how the color turns out before committing to coloring your entire head.

Consult a professional hair stylist if you're unsure of how to use indigo powder or if you have any concerns about how it may affect your hair.
