Description

What is Bio-Brokkoli-Raab-Sprossensamen?

Organic Broccoli Raab Sprouting Seeds (also known as rapini) are for growing fresh, peppery sprouts or microgreens at home. The botanical name is Brassica rapa var. ruvo.

These seeds suit either the jar method for sprouts or the tray method for microgreens, and are ready to harvest within a matter of days once growing — no garden, greenhouse or outdoor space needed, just a windowsill with reasonable light. The flavour carries the same peppery, broccoli-raab character as the mature vegetable, which makes it a popular addition to salads, sandwiches and bowls once harvested.

Sprouting is a simple way to grow your own fresh food indoors, and broccoli raab is a good option if you want something with more bite than milder sprouts. This is an organic, high-germination seed with no additives, and it's suitable for a vegan diet.

Nature's Root supplies it in sizes from 60g up to 5kg, so it suits anything from an occasional batch to regular home growing.

Questions before you choose

Can't see your question? Get in touch and we'll help.

Why is the soak so short?

Broccoli raab seeds take up water quickly. Soaking for longer than about 4 hours can reduce how many seeds sprout.

How long do broccoli raab sprouts take?

About 4–5 days in a jar, or 8–12 days as microgreens on a tray.

How much seed should I use?

About 2 tablespoons for a 1-litre jar, or 15–20g for a standard 25 × 50cm tray (4–5g for a 15 × 20cm tray).

What does broccoli raab taste like?

Tangier and more mustardy than broccoli, with a slightly bitter finish. It pairs well with garlic, chilli and lemon.

Should I cook sprouts before eating them?

Yes. The Food Standards Agency advises cooking sprouted seeds until they're steaming hot all the way through, unless they're sold as ready to eat. Home-grown sprouts aren't, so cook them before eating.

Is it suitable for vegans?

Yes.

How should I store the seeds?

Keep them sealed in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, and reseal the pouch after opening.
