Can I grow alfalfa as microgreens?
Alfalfa is best as jar sprouts. For microgreens on a tray, try broccoli, radish or kale seeds instead.
How long do alfalfa sprouts take?
About 5–6 days from soaking, with a final day in indirect light so the leaves turn green.
How much seed should I use?
About 2 tablespoons for a 1-litre jar. The seeds grow to roughly ten times their volume.
How do I remove the seed hulls?
Tip the sprouts into a bowl of cool water and swish them gently. Most hulls float to the top and can be skimmed off.
Should I cook sprouts before eating them?
Yes. The Food Standards Agency advises cooking sprouted seeds until they're steaming hot all the way through, unless they're sold as ready to eat. Home-grown sprouts aren't, so cook them before eating.
Is it suitable for vegans?
Yes.
How should I store the seeds?
Keep them sealed in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, and reseal the pouch after opening.
